# Welcome to the EDGE Lab!

## About the Lab

The EDGE Lab, a part of Helix's [CTE EDGE](https://www.helixcharter.net/domain/24) program, is a classroom makerspace where all students (and staff!) are encouraged to explore, create, and tinker! Check out our [**project gallery**](/overview/project-gallery) to see some of the things students have made in the lab, and get started making with our [**easy-to-use tutorials**](/getting-started/tutorials-how-to)!

### **Our hours:**

* Monday - Thursday 7:15 a.m. - 3:45 pm.&#x20;
  * \[Classes are taught in the lab periods 1, 2, & 4 during Fall 2025]
* <mark style="color:green;">**ASPIRE Program:**</mark>&#x20;
  * Tuesday & Thursday 7:15 - 8:30 a.m. &#x20;
  * Tuesday, Wednesday, & Thursday 3:45 - 5:15 p.m.&#x20;

Students are welcome to work in the lab before and after school, during breaks, or during free periods. Teachers interested in scheduling a class visit should contact Mrs. Potter for more info.

The maker lab is, primarily, a do-it-yourself space. We encourage you to use our [**self-guided tutorials**](/getting-started/tutorials-how-to) to learn how to make items and use the [**EDGE Lab equipment**](/overview/equipment)**.**&#x20;

During ASPIRE hours, all making is FREE! During the school day, we charge for the cost of supplies. Pricing information can be found [**here**](/overview/pricing)**.**&#x20;

# Orders

## How it works:

* **Prepare any artwork / design / wording** that will be included in your project. *(Please note that, although we can prepare your images for laser cutting, printing, etc., our ability to **design** artwork for you is limited. Providing us with an image or design will greatly expedite the process!)*&#x20;
  * Submit designs as: Adobe Illustrator, .pdf, .jpeg, or Google Doc

# Buttons

Create pinback buttons with any image or photo!

### **PART ONE: Create Your Design**

1. **Go to:** [**Canva Button Template** ](https://canva.link/k0sh9m6hoicrgq1)
2. Upload your image.
3. Click and drag image to the center of the circle (image frame).&#x20;
4. To print: Share and download your design as a .pdf.&#x20;
5. **If you’re working on an EDGE Lab computer: open the .pdf and send it to the Canon UniFlow printer. Then, go to the printer to retrieve your print. (Follow instructions on the printer to log in & print.)**
   * If you logged onto the computer with the EDGE lab account, you’ll use the code **381** to log into the printer.
6. If you’re working on your Chromebook, email the .pdf to yourself and log in to an EDGE Lab computer to print.&#x20;
7. **Once you’ve got your design printed, bring it to the EDGE Lab to use the button press.**

### **PART TWO: Using the Button Maker**

Directions

1. Put the **Front of Button**, smooth side up, on the left side of the button maker.

2. Put your **Image** face-up on top of the front of the button, then put the clear **plastic circle** over both.

3. Place the **back of the button** into the right hand side of the button maker. Make sure that the button’s ***zig zag*** is facing the stamp.

4. Next, flip the side with the **front of button**, **plastic disc**, and **image** to the back and pull down, firmly, on the handle. Then, release.

5. Flip the sides so that the button back is at the back of the machine, and pull down again. When you release the handle, you’ll have a button!


# Vinyl Stickers

Create single-color stickers made of vinyl!

### **Making Vinyl Stickers**

1. **Log onto one of the EDGE Lab computers that’s connected to a Silhouette Cameo vinyl cutter.**
2. **Find the image(s) you want to make a sticker out of**. For best results, use images (such as logos) that have clear, solid lines and are a single color. Your design will be cut (not printed) on a sheet of vinyl that is just one color, so (even if there are multiple colors in the image) your sticker will be just one color.
3. **Once you’ve found the image(s), download them to the desktop by right-clicking the image and selecting “Save image as.”** When prompted, give your image(s) a name and save to the computer.
4. **Open Silhouette Studio on the computer by clicking the** ![](/files/dSFo8eVXQbTmCaJEiytB) **icon, or by typing “Silhouette Studio” in the search bar “**![](/files/122qbiH4GKSVqxJsnPb5)
5. **When Silhouette Studio opens, click the Page Setup icon**![](/files/Et5EXpZrYLfJprnKFuMW) **to open the Page Settings**

Set the **Size to: Auto**

Set the **Cutting Mat to: None**

Click the **Registration Mark** icon ![](/files/AV3uSf7AnaJimQP61BeU) and set the **Style to: Off/None**

The design area should be blank with a red border

6. **Place your image into Silhouette Studio by going to File -> Merge**
7. A window will pop-up; select the Desktop, and select your image
8. **Resize your image**

Click the image once, & drag any of the corner squares to resize.

Make sure that the image is not near the red borderlines.

9. **Outline the image**

Click and drag to highlight your whole image

Move the original image and you will see the trace result of the image

10. **Load the sheet of vinyl**

Take a sheet of vinyl, and make sure there is enough room for your design to fit on it. It should be at least 2 inches wider and taller than your design

Open the top of the Cameo and place the vinyl along the bar

Align the left edge of the vinyl with the blue line inside the Cameo

Unlock the rolling bar

Move the white right roller to the right corner of the vinyl and lock the rolling bar

Press the load button on the Cameo screen to load the vinyl, making sure that it loads straight

If the vinyl loads crooked, hit the unload button on the screen and load the paper again

11. **Send the file to be cut**

In Silhouette Studio, click **Send** on the upper right ![](/files/n8JpLftYE3UfBYWqtOFV)

Select **Simple** ![](/files/RNnLmGg0bXrMMObXIRLM)

On the **Material** option, scroll down until you see the Vinyl options

Make sure to select the correct type of vinyl you are using (i.e Glossy or Matte)

Click the **Send** button on the bottom and the Cameo will start to cut the images. If the vinyl slips (resulting in a bad cut), you'll need to unload the vinyl, load a new piece of vinyl, and re-send the cut.&#x20;

12. **Unload the stickers**

When the Cameo is done cutting, press the Unload button on the Cameo

Take the vinyl and cut a rectangle around the design

Take a weeding tool and remove any vinyl you don’t want on your design

13. **Apply Transfer Paper.**&#x20;

Cut out a rectangle that fits around your design, then peel off the transfer paper and apply the sticky side to your design.&#x20;

Smooth out the transfer paper, making sure to remove any air bubbles.&#x20;

Once all the air bubbles are out, you’re ready to apply your sticker. Just peel off the transfer paper and your design should stick onto the transfer paper. Stick your design where you want it. Peel off the transfer paper, and your design should now stay where you want it.

# Full Color Stickers

Make a paper sticker with any design or photo!

### **Making Full Color Stickers**

1. **Log into one of the EDGE Lab computers using the login credentials displayed on the terminal. Make sure the computer is connected to one of the Sihouette Cameo vinyl cutters.**&#x20;
2. **Find the image(s) you want to make a sticker of**. Most people find images online, but you can also use original artwork or photos. If you want to use an image saved on your phone, email the photo to yourself.
3. **Once you’ve found the image(s), download to the desktop by right clicking the image and selecting “Save Image As”**
4. **Open Silhouette Studio on the computer by clicking the** ![](/files/er55MIvbWzgsZEcLR1OZ) **icon, or by typing “Silhouette Studio” in the search bar “**![](/files/kV0l7W0NCchfaouEzEYh)
5. **In Silhouette Studio, click the Page Setup icon**![](/files/6RSyxkwD7ZsyRSlmp43n) **to open the Page Settings**

   a. Set the Size to Letter

   b. Set the Cutting Mat to Cameo 12 x 12

   c.Click the Registration Mark icon ![](/files/h66jSaDbLEGch5EMXf2g) and set to **On**

   The paper should now have a crosshatch pattern along the top and on the bottom left corner

6. **Place your image into Silhouette Studio by going to File -> Merge and selecting the image you saved.**
7. **Resize your image**
   1. Click the image once, drag any of the corner squares to get the sticker to the size you want
   2. Make sure that the image is not too close to the crosshatch or the red border.
   3. If you’re placing multiple images repeat steps 5 and 6. **Be sure to leave some space between each of the images** (as you’ll be creating border cut lines later).

8. **To print, go to File -> Print. When the Print window pops up, select Print\@Helix (for the color printer).**
9. Click on **Preferences** and make sure that it's set to "color" (not black and white).
10. Click on the **Paper Source** tab and select **Multi-purpose Tray**.
11. On **Paper Type,** click Settings and select the Labels option
12. Click **Print** to send your file to the printer. A "Cost Center" pop-up will appear. Choose "General Printing" (or "Assets" if you're printing during Aspire time).&#x20;
13. **Take a sheet of Sticker Paper and locate the big Canon Uniflow printer on the other side of the library**
14. **Log in to the printer with the code 381.**

Select “**Secure Print**” and select either "General Printing" or "Assets"

Open the **Multi-purpose tray on the side of the printer and place the sticker paper, making sure the printable side is facing down.**

Select the document you want to print and Select “**Print Jobs**”

15. **Return to the EDGE Lab computer and get a cutting mat**
16. Make sure the arrow on the cutting mat is pointing up

17. Align the bottom left corner of the paper with the the 11 inch line and the left borderline on the cutting mat

18. Make sure the paper is lying flat on the cutting mat
19. Place small pieces of tape on the top, bottom, and right side of the paper
20. **Turn on the Cameo and load the paper into the Cameo**

Align the left edge of the cutting mat with the blue line inside the Cameo

Unlock the rolling bar

Move the white right roller to the right corner of the cutting mat and lock the rolling bar

21. **Return to Silhouette Studio to give your images an outline for the Cameo to cut**

**Select the trace result (inner border) and delete it to keep only the offset (outer border).**

Name it Sticker Outside

Set the Speed to 6 and the force to 28

Click Save and close the Materials window

Now select the sticker outside option

Click the **Send** button on the bottom, and the Cameo will start to cut the images

23. **Remove the stickers**

When the Cameo is done cutting, press the **Unload** button on the Cameo

Take the paper of the cutting mat and your stickers should stay on the mat

Take them off the mat, and they’re ready to be peeled!


# Heat Transfer Vinyl / Heat Press

Create custom t-shirts (or other fabric items) with vinyl heat transfers! Works for text and single-color images.

### Preparing the Design:

1. **Log into an EDGE Lab computer that's connected to one of the Silhouette Cameo Vinyl Cutters. Then, find the image(s) you want to make a heat transfer out of**. For best results, use images that are a single color, with clear lines and little interior detail.
2. **Once you've found the image, download it to the desktop by right clicking the image and selecting "Save Image As"**
3. **Open Silhouette Studio on the computer by clicking the** ![](/files/C2SyBitMk91HwC1SbHXR) **icon, or by typing “Silhouette Studio” in the search bar “**![](/files/BKZBrtSz8qpauqCQxZBC)
4. **In Silhouette Studio, click the Page Setup icon**![](/files/8RmGs7XQLNWTpeURBVgS) **to open the Page Settings**

Set the **Size to Auto**

Set the **Cutting Mat to None**

Click the **Registration Mark** icon ![](/files/WWVxg01GVdIFHLwmNel4) and set the **Style to Off/None**

The design area should be blank with a red border

5. **Place your image into Silhouette Studio by going to File -> Merge…**
6. **Resize your image**

Click the image and drag any of the corner squares to get the image to the size you want

Make sure that the image is not too close to the red border. (For best results, leave at least a half inch margin between the image and the border)

16. **Load the Vinyl into the Silhouette Cameo machine.**
17. Take the heat transfer vinyl, and make sure there is enough room for your design. It should be at least 2 inches wider and taller than your design

**Make sure that when loading the vinyl into the Cameo, the matte side is facing up**

16. Open the top of the Cameo and place the vinyl
17. Align the left edge of the vinyl with the blue guide line inside the Cameo

If the vinyl did not stay aligned (if it slips or loads at an angle) hit the unload button on the screen and load the paper again

18. **Send the file to be cut**

21. Under the **“material”** option, scroll down until you see the Heat Transfer options. Select **Heat Transfer, Reflective**

22. Click the **Send** button on the bottom and the Cameo will start to cut the images
23. **Unload and Weed the Vinyl**

When the Cameo is done cutting, press the Unload button on the Cameo

Take the vinyl and cut a rectangle around the design

**Turn the vinyl matte side up**, take a weeding tool, and peel away any vinyl you don’t want on your design.

### **Using The Heat Press**

1. Open the Heat Press
2. Turn the Heat Press on
3. Set the temperature to 305 degrees and the timer to 15 seconds. It will take the press a few minutes to reach the correct temperature.
4. **NOTE: The top plate of the heat press will be VERY hot.** The bottom plate should be safe to touch. Please be careful.
5. Once it’s reached temperature, carefully place your fabric on the bottom plate of the press. Make sure the fabric has no folds and that the part of the fabric where the design will be placed is centered.
6. **Take some teflon paper and place it on top of the fabric.**
7. Close the heat press and press the fabric for 5 seconds then open the heat press. This is done to remove any wrinkles on the fabric.
8. Remove the teflon paper
9. Place the vinyl on the fabric where you want the design, making sure that the **sticky side is facing the fabric**.
10. Place the teflon paper on the fabric
11. Close the heat press and press the fabric for 15 seconds.
12. After the 15 seconds are up, open the heat press and remove the teflon paper.
13. Slowly remove the plastic from the vinyl, making sure that the vinyl stays on the fabric. If the vinyl is not staying on the fabric, place the teflon paper back on the fabric and press it again.
14. Once all of the plastic has been removed from the vinyl, take the fabric off the heat press and **turn the heat press off**.


# 3D Modeling & Printing

The EDGE Lab has a variety of printers for different sizes & types of models. For most projects, we suggest starting with the easy-to-use UP Mini. If you need a larger printer, just ask us!

## **Using the UpMini 3D Printers**

**Download the File to Print**

* Download an .stl file to print. It can be something you created using a CAD software such as [Tinkercad](https://www.tinkercad.com/) or a file you found on a website like [Thingiverse](https://www.thingiverse.com/).
* Make a note of where the file was downloaded and the name of the file so that you can locate it easily.

**Using the Printer Software**

* The UpMini has a small print bed ideal for printing small 3D models such as figures and small parts. It requires little set-up to start printing.
* Turn on the printer by flipping the switch on the back of the printer.
* Locate the **UpStudio** software on the computer and open it.

* You will be taken to the printing page, where you will see the printing bed (the checkered pattern) and the available printing space represented by the box around the print bed. The gray triangle represents the front of the print bed. The model must fit inside the print space or the UpMini will not be able to print it. If the model does not fit, it will need to be resized.

* Click the **Initialize Printer** button on the left side of the screen to get the printer ready.

* While the printer is initializing, add your model by clicking the **Add (+)** sign and then clicking **Add 3D Model**. When the dialog box appears, open your .stl file, and the model will be loaded to UpStudio.

* **Setting up the Model**
  * When the model is loaded, check that it fits inside the printing space. If any part of the model is outside the printing space, the model must be made smaller.

* Click the **Scale** button, making sure that the lock button is highlighted blue to keep the proportions of the model when shrinking it.

* To shrink the model, click and hold any of the arrows that appear on the model and drag it into the model. Do this until the model is completely inside the printing space.

* If the model fits in the printing space and there is still some room, you can also make the model bigger. Go to **Scale** and drag any of the arrows out of the model, making sure that all of the model stays within the printing space.

* Once the model has been resized and fits in the printing space, click the **Move** button and click **Drop** to print bed. This makes sure that the model sits correctly on the print bed. Otherwise, the model may not be printed correctly and you will end with a failed print.

**Getting Ready to Print**

* Click the **Print** button, and the **Print Settings** will appear. Make sure that the **Layer Thickness** is set to 0.2mm, the **Infill** set to 15%, and the **Quality** is Normal. Leave Nozzle offset as it is. Make sure the **Unsolid Model** is checked and that both the **No Raft** and **No Support** boxes are unchecked.

* Click the **Preview** button at the bottom left of the Print Settings. This will give you an estimate of how long it will take to print the model. **Make sure that your print will finish before the EDGE Lab closes. We will not leave printers running after hours.**
* Click the **Exit Preview** button. Then go back to **Print** and click the Print button and the button at the bottom of the Print Settings. The model will be sent to the printer to print. Make sure that the printer door is closed.
* As the model is being printed check back on it periodically to make sure nothing has gone wrong while printing. If something goes wrong, press the **Pause** button on the printer and stop the print. Inform the Edge Lab Facilitator or EDGE Lab TA of what happened, so that he/she can help you fix the problem. The print will have to be started again, so there might not be time to print it that same day.

**Unloading the Print**

* When your print is done, the printer will beep. Open the printer door, ask for a scraper, and remove the print from the print bed by carefully scraping in between the print bed and the model. If you don’t feel comfortable doing this, ask the Edge Lab Facilitator or a TA for help.

* Delete your model from UpStudio by clicking the model and pressing the **Delete** key on the keyboard.Then, close UpStudio.
* If you are unable to stay during the whole time that the model is printing, inform the Edge Lab Facilitator or TA, so that they can check the print while you are gone to make sure nothing goes wrong / take the model out once it is done.
* Once the model has been removed from the printer it will have some excess material that you will have to take off.

### **Loading and Unloading Filament**

* If there is no filament or not enough, you have to load a new roll. Ask the Edge Lab Facilitator or TA for a new roll of filament. You can also ask for a specific color.

**Unloading**

* Open the top of the UpMini by removing the top panels
* Click the **Maintenance** button and then click the **Withdraw** button.
* The printer will heat up the extruder tip, which will take a few minutes. The printer will beep once it has reached the correct temperature.
* Once the printer starts to withdraw the filament, the filament will start to move upwards. Once the filament stops moving, pull on it lightly and slowly to remove all of the filament from the printhead. **NOTE: Don’t yank too hard on the filament as you’re removing it. This can cause the filament to break and clog.**
* Pull the filament out of the guiding tube and take the spool out of the holder.

**Loading**

* Place the new spool in the holder.
* Feed the filament through the guiding tube until it comes out the other end.
* Open the top of the UpMini by removing the top panels
* Click the **Maintenance** button and then click the **Extrude** button.
* The printer will heat up the extruder tip, which will take a few minutes. The printer will beep once it has reached the correct temperature.
* Once the printer starts to move the motors, carefully guide the filament into the printhead.
* Once you feel the motor pulling on the filament, let go of the filament to prevent any grind on the filament.
* Once filament starts to extrude, press the **Stop** button and remove the extruded filament from the print bed.
* If no filament was extruded, press the **Extrude** button one more time. If it’s still not extruding, please let the EDGE Lab Facilitator or TA know.


# MakerBot Sketch

**Download the File to Print**

Download an .stl file to print. It can be something you created using CAD software such as Tinkercad or a file you found on a website like thingiverse.com.

**The Printer Software**

The MakerBot Sketch has a small print bed ideal for printing small 3D models. It requires a bit of setup on the printer and software to start printing

1. Turn on the MakerBot Sketch by flipping the switch on the right side.
2. Locate the MakerBot Print app on the computer and open it.

3. When MakerBot Print opens you will see the printing bed and the available printing space represented by the box around the print bed. The model must fit inside the print space or the MakerBot Sketch will not be able to print it. If the model does not fit, it will need to be resized.
4. Go to **File->Insert File**. When the dialog box appears, open the file you downloaded and the model will be loaded into MakerBot Print.

**Sizing the Model**

1. Once the model loads, check that it is all inside the printing space. If any part of the model is outside the printing space, the model must be resized.&#x20;
   1. Click on the model.
   2. Click the **Scale** button ![](https://lh7-us.googleusercontent.com/oa9c4w0x2fNvUTR6WsH82JwGZYx8RQR72weA9lFTZM4VhXFnnPMaVHyYbz4AvqJpg8cIUyEBp8nsIkXd6CnufTpq1CaaghWMAA7LcvAlfSytjCLmC6ccgbdVkwXiAx_Qqljgct0AGlfHICIYiqnH9Tk) and make sure that the **Uniform Scaling** box is checked to keep the proportions of the model.
   3. To shrink the model, you can decrease the dimensions of the side you want to change, in millimeters, or change the percent to a number lower than 100. Since the Uniform Scaling box is checked, changing one dimension will change the rest. Shrink the model until it is completely in the print space.
2. If there is still some room in the printing space, you can make the model bigger. Just go to **Scale** and increase the dimension or percent, making sure that all of the model stays within the printing space.
3. Once the model has been resized, you have to set up the printer.

**Setting Up the Printer**

1. Make sure that the MakerBot Print software has recognized the MakerBot Sketch printer. The rectangle at the bottom right corner of the screen should display **MakerBot Sketch**. If this is not the case, click the rectangle and click the **Select** button next to MakerBot Sketch. The printer has now been selected. Click the rectangle again to minimize it.

7. If the Edge Lab Facilitator says it is ok, plug a flash drive into the computer and click the red **Export** button on the lower right corner of the screen. A window will pop up asking where to save the file. Select the flash drive, and name your file.
8. Once the file is saved onto the flash drive, remove the flash drive from the computer and plug it in to the MakerBot Sketch 3D printer.
9. On the 3D printer's touch screen, select **Print**. Then select the flash drive icon and, when the files show up, press the play icon next to you print. **Unloading the Print**

1. When your print is done the printer will beep. Ask for a scraper and take the print out of the print bed by carefully scraping between the print bed and the model. If you don’t feel comfortable doing this, ask the Edge Lab Facilitator for help.
2. Delete your model from MakerBot Print by clicking the model and pressing the **Delete** key on the keyboard. Then close MakerBot Print.
3. If you are unable to stay during the whole time that the model is printing, inform the Edge Lab Facilitator so that they can check the print while you are gone to make sure nothing goes wrong or to take the model out once it is done.
4. Once the model has been removed from the printer it will have some excess material that you will have to take off.

**Loading and Unloading Filament**

If the MakerBot Sketch is out of filament or if you want to use a different color filament, follow these steps:

**Unloading**

1. On the touch screen of the MakerBot Sketch, select **Material;** then select **Unload Filament**.
2. The printhead will heat up (this will take a few minutes).
3. Once the printhead is at the correct temperature, the motors will start to withdraw the filament. Follow the instructions on the screen to remove the filament.
4. Once the filament has been fully removed, gently pull off the filament door and remove the spool.

**Loading**

1. Remove the filament door
2. Use only PLA filament
3. Insert the spool into the compartment
4. On the touch screen of the MakerBot Sketch, select **Material,** then select **Load Filament**.
5. The printhead will heat up (this will take a few minutes).
6. Once the printhead is at the correct temperature, follow the instructions on the screen to load the filament.
7. Once the filament is extruding, press **Next** on the touch screen.


# MakerBot Replicator+

**Download the File to Print**

Download an .stl file to print. It can be something you created using CAD software such as Tinkercad or a file you found on a website like thingiverse.com

**The Printer Software**

The MakerBot has a large print bed ideal for printing larger 3D models. It requires a bit of setup on the printer and software to start printing:

1. Turn on the MakerBot by flipping the switch on the left back side
2. Locate the MakerBot Print app on the computer and open it.

3. When MakerBot Print opens you will see the print bed and the available printing space represented by the box around the print bed. The model must fit inside the print space or the MakerBot will not be able to print it. If the model does not fit, it will need to be resized.
4. Go to **File->Insert File**. When the dialog box appears, open the file you downloaded and the model will load into MakerBot Print.

**Sizing the Model**

1. Once your model loads, check that it fits inside the printing space. If any part of the model is outside the printing space, the model must be resized:
   1. Click on the model.
   2. Click the **Scale** button ![](https://lh7-us.googleusercontent.com/rlApOcTMJ6osHiVsdwyWb3NMtiJVG4QpcMQVQLU1hpIxFcrsxA7WV5qMURYNfXskKo9Q4z4ugK3iWSK6xFB71WOrza3WYXqhdPRBGVmaV39kCKFAH1USBgXbmiOviJLtdFFJqcH4Db09EWy2-d4WqQ), and make sure that the **Uniform Scaling** box is checked to keep the proportions of the model.
   3. To shrink the model, you can decrease the dimensions of the side you want to change, in millimeters, or change the percent to a number lower than 100. Since the Uniform Scaling box is checked, changing one dimension will change the rest. Shrink the model until it is completely in the print space.
2. If there is still some room in the printing space, you can also make the model bigger. Just go to Scale and increase the dimension or percent, making sure that all of the model stays within the printing space.
3. Once the model is the right size, you have to set up the printer.

**Setting Up the Printer**

1. Check that the MakerBot Print software has recognized the printer. The rectangle at the bottom right corner of the screen should display **MakerBot Replicator+**. If this is not the case, click the rectangle and click the Select button next to MakerBot Replicator+. The printer has now been selected. Click the rectangle again to minimize it.

3. Set the **Support Density** to 10% and set the **Support Type** to Breakaway (PLA) Support. Everything else should be left as is.

5. If the Edge Lab Facilitator says it is ok, click the red **Print** button at the lower right corner of the screen. The model will be sent to the printer and will start to print as soon as the printhead heats up.
6. As the model is being printed, check back on it periodically to make sure nothing has gone wrong while printing. If an error occurs, press the **Pause** button on the printer to stop the print. Inform the Edge Lab Facilitator so that he/she can help you fix the problem.&#x20;

**Unloading the Print**

When your print is done the printer will beep, ask for a scrapper and take the print out of the print bed by carefully scrapping in between the print bed and the model. If you don’t feel comfortable doing this ask the Edge Lab facilitator for help.

Delete your model from MakerBot Print by clicking the model and pressing the **Delete** key on the keyboard then close MakerBot Print.

4. Retract the filament through the guide tube by manually spinning the filament spool, then pull up the filament panel and remove the spool.

**Loading**

1. Pull up the filament panel at the top (back) of the printer
2. Insert the new spool into the compartment
3. Feed the end of the filament through the guide tube until it comes out the other end.
4. Use the dial on the MakerBot to select **Filament** then select **Load Filament**.
5. The printhead will heat up (this will take a few minutes).
6. Once the printhead reaches the correct temperature, follow the instructions on the screen to insert the filament.
7. Once the filament is extruded press the dial on the printer.


# LulzBot Taz 6

**Download the File to Print**

1. Go to **File->Open File**. When the dialog box appears, open the file you downloaded and the model will be loaded onto the software.

**Sizing the Model**

Once your model loads, check that it fits inside the printing space. If any part of the model is outside the printing space, the model must be resized. Also: you must check that the model is not going beneath the print bed, as this will cause the LulzBot to move the printhead into the print bed which will crack the print bed and make the printer unusable.

1. Start by checking the position of the model. Click on the model and three arrows should appear.

2. The **move** option will be highlighted on the left side of the screen. **Make sure that the Z position is set to zero**. The X and Y positions can be set to any value as long as they keep the model inside the print bed. It is recommended that the X and Y positions are also set to zero if only one model is being printed to keep it at the center of the build plate, but it is not necessary.
3. To resize the model, select the **Scale** option under **Move**, and the arrows will turn to cubes. You can resize the model by dragging the cubes or by changing the size or percentage on the Scale option.

5. Once the model has been resized, you have to set up the printer.

**Setting Up the Printer**

1. In the upper right corner you will see the **Material** option. Leave that as is, as the setting should be correct for the filament that is currently on the printer.
2. Click on the **Monitor** tab, then under **Manual** **Control** click the **Connect** button to have the software connect to the LulzBot. Once the software is connected, the top of the screen will display: **Connected via USB**

3. Click on the **Prepare** tab, and make sure that the **Print Setup** is set to **Custom**.

**Printing the Model**

1. Look at the estimated print time at the bottom right of the screen, and check with the Edge Lab Facilitator to make sure that it is ok to print, as there might not be enough time left in the day.
2. If the Edge Lab Facilitator says the print time is ok, set the button next to the print time so that it reads **Print via USB** instead of Save to File.
3. Look under the **Material** option. If there is a message prompting you to use glue, grab a glue stick and place a small layer of glue on the print bed on the area that the model will print.
4. Press the **Print via USB** button, and the print bed and the printhead will begin to heat.
5. Once the LulzBot is ready to print, it will begin by calibrating itself and cleaning the printhead. Once it starts to print, check back on the model periodically to make sure nothing has gone wrong while printing. If an error occurs, press the **Pause** button at the bottom right of the screen and then press Abort Print. Inform the Edge Lab Facilitator, so that he/she can help you fix the problem.&#x20;

3. Click the **Preheat** button under **Hot End**. The printhead will heat up, and the target temperature will be displayed on the right.
4. Unlike the other machines, the LulzBot does not make a sound once it is ready, so you have to monitor the temperature on the screen. Once it reaches the target temperature, the printhead is hot enough to start withdrawing the filament.
5. Set the **Extrusion** amount to **30**.
6. Click the **Retract** button to start withdrawing the filament. The LulzBot only withdraws a certain amount of filament at a time so the **Withdraw** button has to be pressed several times before all the filament is withdrawn. **DO NOT** press the Retract buttons several times at once. Wait for the LulzBot to stop retracting before pressing the button again.
7. Once all the filament has left the motor, unhinge the guiding rail and gently pull the filament out.
8. Cut off the tip of the filament so that there is no stringy filament hanging from it and you only have the solid filament.
9. Roll the filament back onto the spool and remove the spool from the holder of LulzBot.<br>

**Loading**

1. Place the new spool on the holder of the LulzBot.
2. Feed the end of the filament through the guide tube until it comes out the other end.
3. Click the **Prepare** tab
4. Select the correct filament type from the **Material** option
5. Look at the thickness of the material as that will determine which profile you have to choose in the **Profile** option. **If the thickness is 2.85mm then select Standard. If the thickness is 1.75mm then select Standard 1.75**
6. Click the **Monitor** tab. Click the **Connect** button under Manual control.
7. Click the **Preheat** button under **Hot End**. The printhead will heat up, and the target temperature will be displayed on the right.
8. Unlike the other machines, the LulzBot does not make a sound once it is ready, so you have to monitor the temperature on the screen. Once it reaches the target temperature, the printhead is hot enough to start extruding the filament.
9. Set the **Extrusion** amount to **50**.
10. Unhinge the guiding rail and guide the filament into the motor.
11. Once the filament is on the motor, close the hinge.
12. Press the **Extrude** button. The LulzBot only extrudes a certain amount at a time so press the extrude button until filament starts to come out of the print head.  **DO NOT** press the Extrude buttons several times at once. Wait for the LulzBot to stop extruding before pressing the button again.

**Creating New Material Profiles**

By default, the LulzBot is set to use filament of 2.85mm thickness, but you are also able to use material with thickness of 1.75mm. If you want to use material that is 1.75mm thick you have to make a Custom Profile (if there is not one created already) as the preset profiles have the material thickness set to 2.85mm. You only have to create a new profile once per material.

1. Under the **Profile** tab select the **Manage Profiles** option

2. When the Profiles window pops up select the **Standard** profile and then click the **Duplicate** button.
3. When asked for the name it is suggested that you name it **Standard 1.75mm. T**hat way it is easy to identify that it is the standard profile for 1.75mm thick material. Then click **ok**
4. Close the Profile window then select the new profile from the **Profile** options.
5. In the **Material** tab under **Print Setup**, **change the Diameter from 2.85 to 1.75.** Go back to the  **Profile** options and select **Update** profile with current setting/overrides to save the changes.

Make a silicone mold of an object, then create resin models of the original!

### **Step One: Silicone Mold**

1. Measure the object that you’ll be making a mold of.
2. You’re going to be making a foam “frame” to hold the object. Measure & cut out 4 foam board walls that are ½” taller than the object and a floor that is ½” wider than the object. Neat, even cuts will make it easier to create a secure frame.&#x20;

3. Using hot glue, construct the walls of the frame, making sure that each wall hangs slightly over the corner edge (the walls should not be flush). USE A LOT OF GLUE, around all seams - inside and out - so that the silicone won’t leak from your frame.&#x20;

4. Lay your frame on a plate and fill the enclosure with water to test for leaks. Seal any leaks with more hot glue.
5. Apply a thin layer of glue to the bottom of your object and stick it to the floor of your box. Your object should not be touching the walls of the frame.
6. **Spray your item with mold release** (this makes it easier to remove from the mold).
7. Mixing the silicone:
   1. Pour Part A into one container, and Part B into another container. Stir each solution.
   2. Mix equal parts A and B into a third container. Stir well. Once mixed, you have about 45 minutes to use the solution before it starts to harden.
8. Pour the A/B mixture slowly and evenly into the frame so that it completely surrounds & covers your item.
9. Let sit for 5 - 6 hours to allow your mold to set
10. Peel off the foam walls and remove your item from the silicone mold. (Depending on the shape of the item, you may need to make a slit in the mold.)

### **Step Two: UV Resin**

1. If you’re adding color to your resin, mix desired color into the clear UV resin. Your color should NOT be too opaque, as this complicates the curing process.
2. If you had to cut your mold, wrap a couple of rubber bands around outside to keep it pulled together (but not too tight; it shouldn’t squeeze the mold)
3. Spray the inside of your silicone mold with mold release
4. Pour the resin into your mold slowly and evenly to minimize bubbles. (There will be some small bubbles, but you don’t want large ones.)
5. Shine the UV light on all sides of the mold (30 - 60 seconds per side) to cure the resin. Let it sit for a few minutes to allow it to cool.
6. Pull your finished design from the mold! :)

# Preparing your design

Learn how to prepare images you'd like to engrave or cut!

### **Choosing the Design**

Start by choosing a design / text to laser cut. Any design must be prepared so that the laser cutter software can “translate” it in order to cut. Please note the requirements below:

**Text**

Text is the easiest to prepare. The only requirement is that the text should have a pure black fill. (Most preloaded fonts work fine.)

**Logos, Clipart, Black and White designs**

Most designs that are found on the Internet will require alterations so that they can be used. Most of these designs will have colors, so they must be converted to black and white using Adobe Illustrator.

**Pictures**

Pictures can’t be prepared in Adobe Illustrator. Instead, we have to use the ULS Photo software. See the Laser Images guide for instructions on how this is done.

### **Preparing Designs in Adobe Illustrator**

* Open Adobe Illustrator and create a new document
* Select the **Letter** preset and **make sure that the dimensions are in inches**

* Click the **Advanced Options** and set the **Color mode to RGB** then click **Create**

* When the document is created, you will see the following window

* On the left you have the **Tools** panel, where you will find the tools to create designs. At the center is the **Work** window where the **Artboard** is and where the design will be made. On the right is the **Properties** window where you can change the properties of the Artboard as well as the properties of the objects used on the design.

**Setting up a Text Design**

To add text, click anywhere on the screen while the Type tool is active and a text box will appear with some random text. To replace the text, just highlight the text and type your own text.
* To change the size of the text, click on the Selection Tool ![](https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/pfAan8EgBtHRynGvXWno5Frk0YDEejjrWnaXt2J6uQRlRMIP_SHJoiBPMZh_MF22xzKO_cqESyiP_40YLYArhTgz4u--H2iFt2lesbA6f9HmnufHbAzPe_IpPx3od3MQRpAaO5tYcjWBPkkrXCeJUoo). This tool is used to select the different objects placed in your work window. To select an object, simply click on it while using the selection tool. If you click and hold on an object you are able to move the object around freely with your mouse.
* To change the size of text, click on it once, then drag any of the white boxes that appear around the text.

**Setting up Image Designs**

* Images can be found using Google Chrome and saving them to the computer.
* The best images to use are those that are **black and white** or that have just 1 or 2 colors. The best way to search is to look for clipart (for example “soccer ball clipart”). Logos are also a good option since they typically don’t have many colors.
* To add an image to Illustrator, go the **File->Place**, then locate the image that will be added. Although the image is selected, it will not be placed right away, it will move around with the cursor. Click on the location you’d like the image on the artboard, and the image will be placed there.
* **Image Trace:** This turns the image into a vector image which allows us to manipulate and keep the quality of the image regardless of what you do to it. To do this, select the image then press the **Image Trace** button on the Properties window. Then, choose **Black and White** tracing.
* **Expand**: Once the image has been traced, you have to adjust it so that it can be interacted with like any other object created in Illustrator. To do this, select the image that was traced and click the **Expand** button on the properties window. This will allow us to ungroup the image and erase the background.
* **Ungroup**: Ungrouping the image will separate the image based on which lines are touching and their color. (Lines that are the same color and touching each other will be grouped together.)
* **Delete the Background**: Click the background of the image and press the delete key.

### **Understanding the Laser Cutter & Colors**

The laser cutter only recognizes the colors Red, Blue and Black. By using RGB color values, we’re able to get those true colors instead of an approximation that CMYK values would give us. The laser cutter works by passing a laser over the material to engrave the design on it. The colors red, black and blue tell the laser cutter what it should do. The colors work as follows:

* **Black** (RGB values R=0, G=0, B=0)
  * This is used for the **Fill** color of the design and will cause the laser cutter to burn the design on the material, making a low cut on the material.
* **Blue** (RGB values R=0, G=0, B=255)
  * This is used for the **Stroke** color of the design and will cause the laser cutter to engrave the outline of the design on the material, making deep cuts on the material. The thickness of the stroke must be set to .001
* **Red** (RGB values R=255, G=0, B=0)
  * This can be used for the **Stroke** color of the design or for the stroke of a shape around the design and will cause the laser cutter to cut through the material. The thickness of the stroke must be set to .001
  * **NOTE: the laser cutter cannot cut through every type of material.** If you’re planning to cut something other than the birch wood sheets, please consult the EDGE Lab Facilitator or a TA.

### **Changing Fill Color**

The Fill color is the color that is used on the inside of an object. Since we are laser cutting, the fill color must be set to **BLACK**

1. Select the object that you want to change the color of.
2. Click the ![](/files/rmHB3Yoo16KHDm6t4R8V) option on the properties window on the right side of the screen.
3. Select the Color Mixer Option

1. Slide all the sliders to the left so that the value on each reads 0 (RGB values R=0, G=0, B=0)
2. This has to be done for every object on the design

### **Changing the Stroke Color**

Giving your design a stroke color of blue makes it pop out more once it is done.

Giving your design a stroke color of red tells the laser cutter that the design has to be cut out from the material. This can’t be done with every material. (Material such as metal, granite, etc can’t be cut through so you can’t add a stroke to the design.)

**Setting the Stroke to Make Design Pop Out**

1. Select the object that you want to change the stroke color of.
2. Click the ![](/files/8yBp47oGAqLcwS9xk54B) option on the properties window on the right side of the screen.
3. Select the **Color Mixer** Option

1. Since we want to make the design pop out, we have to change the stroke color to **blue.** Slide the B slider all the way to the right so that it reads **255**, and slide the R and G slider all the way to the left so that they read **0**.
2. Set the **thickness of the Stroke to .001**

**Setting the Stroke to Cut Out the Design**

1. Select the object that you want to change the stroke color of.
2. Click the ![](/files/L5DsCKKcUi842syjTyZs) option on the properties window on the right side of the screen.
3. Select the **Color Mixer** Option

1. Since we want to make the design cut out, we have to change the stroke color to **red**. Slide the R slider all the way to the right so that it reads **255**, and slide the B and G slider all the way to the left so that they read **0**.
2. Set the **thickness** of the Stroke to **.001**

### Save your design

The whole design must fit in the artboard. If part of the design is outside of the artboard, the artboard must be resized to fit the design OR the design must be resized to fit the artboard. If everything fits okay, save your design in Illustrator.

# Using the cutter

Learn how to operate the laser cutter to make your projects

## **Ready to Engrave / Cut!**

Once your [design has been set up in Illustrator](/getting-started/tutorials-how-to/laser-cutting/preparing-your-design), you can send the design to the laser cutter.

### **Sending to the Printer (laser cutter)**

With your finished design open in Illustrator, go to **File->Print,** and select **VLS6.60** as the printer.

### **Choosing the Material**

Start by choosing the material you want to engrave / cut. There's a wide range of material that can be used for the laser cutter, such as wood, leather, acrylic, and metal. The most common material used in our lab is wood, as it burns easily and the laser cutter can cut through it (as long as it’s not too thick).

<mark style="color:red;">**NOTE**</mark><mark style="color:red;">:</mark> when working with metal, (unless it has been pre-coated for engraving), you’ll need to coat it with Cermark spray so that the laser doesn’t bounce off the metal. Failing to coat metal will result in failed engraving, and may damage the laser. Also, metal can only be engraved (not cut).

<mark style="color:red;">**Flammable / Forbidden Materials:**</mark>

* **Paper, Cardboard, Foam**: These materials can burn extremely easily. If you’re using one of these materials, you <mark style="color:red;">**MUST**</mark> have a staff member present to supervise.
* **PVC** (or anything containing PVC): may <mark style="color:red;">**NOT**</mark> be used. It releases a poisonous gas when burned.

**Selecting / Measuring your material:**

* Press the **Setup** button at the lower left of the print window, then click **continue**, and click on the **Preferences** button. This will pull up the materials window for the laser cutter.
* Choose the material you’d like to use. Then, measure the thickness of the material using the calipers by squeezing the material between the long jaws and reading the measurement on the display; the thickness must be measured in inches. Enter the thickness of the material.
* Once all the information has been entered, press the **OK** button, then the **Print** button and then the **Print** button again. This sends the design to the laser cutter.

### **The Laser Cutter Software**

Once a design has been sent to the laser cutter, you must open the ULS software. The software allows us to control the laser cutter as well as align the design. Locate this Icon ![](/files/dTjgpAiaHaRaZTffkEly) on the computer to open the Laser Cutter software

* When the software opens, make sure that the design appears on the screen. If the design does not appear, go back to Illustrator and double check that the colors of your design are correct. (Remember that the only colors that can be used are black, red, and blue), and check that the whole design is in the artboard. Once the design has been fixed, send it to print again.
* With the design on the software, power the laser cutter on by clicking the red button on the software.

* The printer must go through its boot-up process before it is ready to use. Once the laser cutter is ready, the big green play button will turn green. At this time we can load the material into the cutter.

* Click the **Settings** button at the lower right corner of the screen and make sure that the settings for the laser cutter did not change. (Double check that the material type and thickness are correct).

### **Placing the Material**

The material should be placed in the laser cutter so that it’s aligned along the top of the engraving table. If the material is small, it should not be placed too close to the edges of the engraving table as this may cause the design to be engraved incorrectly onto the material.

The material should lay completely flat on the engraving table. If working with leather or other flexible materials, there should be no folds on the material.

### **Aligning the Design**

Once the material has been placed in the cutter, we have to align the design to the material. By doing this we make sure that the design is engraved / cut where we want it on the material.

**The Focus Tool** ![](/files/yWHE0vjh1JlRFcQfddgU)

This tool allows us to move the laser around the engraving table using the software and a mouse. The software has ruler marks along the top and left side of the screen, which represent the ruler marks along the top and left edge of the screen.

We will use this to help us align the design to the material. The easiest way to align is to try to get the center of the design on the desired location on the material. Using the ruler as a reference, click on where the design should go on the engraving table. The laser will then move to that location on the engraving table. If you are satisfied with the location of the laser on the material, it is time to move the design to that location.

**The Relocate Tool** ![](/files/jDZgT60v21Pj1I00ryAp)

This tool allows us to move the design on the software. When this tool is selected the design will have nine squares surrounding it: one on each corner, one on each side, and one on the center. Select the square that corresponds to the part of the design that was aligned to the material (this will usually be the center square). The selected square will turn blue.

To move the design to where the laser is positioned, click the “**To Pointer**” button. This will move the design to where the laser is, based on the square that was selected.

### **Checking the Design Placement on the Material**

Once the design is aligned to the material, we have to check that the laser won’t go off the material when engraving the design. We can also double-check that we like the positioning of the design on the material.

* Select the “**Focus Tool**”
* Click the edges of the design on the software.
* If at any time the laser “falls off” of the edges, the material must be moved so that all of the design is on the material. If the design doesn’t fit on the design no matter how it is positioned, the design has to be resized in Illustrator.

### **Engraving / Cutting**

Once the design is in the desired place on the material, we can begin the process of engraving the design.

* Close the laser cutter lid. The red blinking light on the laser cutter will turn off when the lid is closed correctly.
* Turn on the air filter, the machine located next to the laser cutter. To turn it on, press the middle button on the machine. The filter sucks out the debris caused by the laser engraving on the material, preventing a fire from starting as well as protecting the lens on the laser cutter.
* Once the air filter is on, the laser can be started. To do this, click the big green play button on the ULS software.
* The laser cutter will start engraving the design. The duration of the process will vary based on the design and material. **Do not leave the laser unattended while it is in operation.**

### **Unloading the Material**

When the job is done, the laser will move to the upper right corner.

Turn off the air filter by pressing the middle button.

Open the lid on the laser cutter and take out the material. The material will not be hot. Some smoke may come off the material but this is normal.

Turn off the laser cutter by clicking the red button on the software and close the lid.

# Laser Cut Cube

New to laser cutting? This tutorial teaches you how to create a cube design in Adobe Illustrator, add custom images, and prepare the file so that the laser cutter can engrave / cut it.

**Overview:**

For this project, you'll start by making two of the six sides of the cube. Then, you'll make copies of those two sides in order to complete the cube. You will be “cutting” off pieces of each shape so that they fit together with "tabs." Once laser cut, you should end up with a 3" x 3" x 3" cube.&#x20;

**Set-Up:**&#x20;

* Create a new **Project** in Adobe Illustrator and set the width to **24 in and the height to 12 in**.

* Click and drag with the mouse to create the rectangle.&#x20;
* Change the dimensions so that the **height and the width are both set to 3 in**.

**Create the "tabs" for the top and bottom of your cube**

* You'll now make the piece that you will use to “cut” off pieces from the square. (These will become "tabs" to fit the sides of your cubes together once all the pieces are cut.)
* Make a **new rectangle that is .5 inch wide by .125 in high**.
* Make a copy of it \[Ctrl+C then Ctrl+V]
* Select the 3 in by 3 in square and the two rectangles. The **align** option should appear on the right hand side. Select **Center Horizontally** and **Center Vertically**

**Create the sides (four faces) of your cube**

* Create another 3 by 3 square
* Create a rectangle that is .125 wide by .5 high
* Make a copy of each of the rectangles, so you now have two of each.
* Select the four rectangles and the new 3 by 3 square and select **Center Horizontally** and **Center Vertically**

* Focus on the top part of the square, hold down the **Alt** key, drag the rectangle to the left, and as you are dragging hold down the **Shift** key, without letting go of Alt, so that the rectangle moves in a straight line. * Select the square and the rectangles and then chose the **Shape Builder Tool** on the left side of the screen and click on the inside part of the rectangle to create a new shape

* You will use this for one of the sides of the cube.
* **Create 3 copies** of this for the other sides.
* Delete all the other small rectangles so that you are left with just the two pieces \[top/bottom and sides] you created.

**Set the correct colors / line thickness for laser cutting.**&#x20;

* The laser cutter recognizes only three colors: black (infill), blue (outline) and red (cut).&#x20;

**Add images to your cube** <br>

You can now add black and white images of your choice to the sides of the cube.

* Look for black and white images on Google and save them using Save Image As. Or, save images you've created to the computer.&#x20;
* Go back to Illustrator and go to **File->Place**…
* Choose your image and click anywhere on the screen to place it. Do not resize the image yet.&#x20;
* Select the image, click the **Image Trace** button on the right side of the screen and select **Black and White Logo**

* Click the **Expand** button

* Place the image on one of the cube pieces (top, bottom, or one of the sides). You can now resize the image to fit within the square.&#x20;
* Repeat the previous steps, adding images to the sides, top, and bottom as desired.
* Save your file and either email it to yourself or put it on a USB to transfer it to the laser cutting PC.&#x20;
